Purepresence

LIN Chiwei (Eric LIN) proposed a participative performance. On a long satin ribbon, Chinese characters are subtitled with their pronunciation. The artist gradually unwinds the reel and reads each sound, initiating the repeated litany one after the other by the audience. Here unfolds, in a fashion similar to a Buddhist prayer, a polyphony freely interpreted by the participants.For LIN Chiwei, audience is a material onto which he imposes limit situations (exposure to electricity, to extra-ordinary behavior …) in an attempt to overcome the conditions that he himself defined and acquired cultural attitudes (passivity, on participation on playfully or serious mode…).
